Phineas and Ferb: Candace Against the Universe Movie Review

A number of years ago, a Phineas and Ferb movie came out. Hyped for weeks on the Disney channel, the movie “Across the Second Dimension” led viewers to a terrible dystopian world which left us all emotionally scarred for years. We all mutually wanted, more than just about anything, to forget that this horrible movie had ever been a part of our lives.

“Candace Against the Universe” is absolutely nothing like “Across the Second Dimension.”

Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candace Against The Universe" to Premiere Exclusively on Disney+ on Friday, August 28 - Morty's TV

Instead, this movie is everything we all love. It stays close to series lore, and even my finiky college brain couldn’t find any inconsistencies. It’s exactly like watching a long episode of the normal Phineas and Ferb show, with Baljeet, Isabella, Buford, and all the regular crew in action. Teaming up with Dr. Doofenschmirtz when Candace and Vanessa get pulled into an intergalactic adventure, this movie has all the songs, all the action, and all the love that we all wanted from a movie based on the series.

Candace and Vanessa, having found themselves far from home, each find their own unique adventure on the far-off planet of Feebla-oot. Phineas and Ferb and the crew swiftly come to help Candace and Vanessa, who are stranded on the alien world, only to find that there is much, much more to the story than meets the eye. There is some excellent Perry the Platypus action, as the incognito agent struggles to help his friends and preserve his own secret identity. Candace really comes into her own, as her she finds that her actions affect more than she thought, and she finds, with the help of her brothers, her own unique place in the galaxy. And at the end of it all, family and true friendship are the keys to saving the universe.

We get to see TONS of shout-outs to the regular series, as previous episodes are frequently mentioned. All those B-team characters we love make an appearance, including Jeremy, Stacie, Jenny, Django, Norm, and even that poor guy with the mustache and glasses who’s always starting new business ventures. And there are a few shout-outs to the Milo Murphy series, as well.

Sadly, we are still Meepless. 😦

The songs in this movie are also really great. Of course, “The Whole Universe is Against Me” is my personal favorite, though Doofenschmirtz’ “Adulting!” song has been stuck in my head most since I watched the movie. The animation is updated just enough, while still preserving all the integrity of the original. There’s so much to love in this movie that it’s hard to fit it all in this post.

The only detractions I have are:

  1. No Meep. Bummer.
  2. The sequence in the spaceship as the crew heads back to earth is a little jarring. Brace yourself.
  3. Phineas and Ferb’s “say this five times fast” antics are extremely annoying throughout the film.

And that’s literally all I can think of. This is a great movie that’s fun for the whole family. For all of us who grew up watching Phineas and Ferb, and for the new kids who are exploring this world for the first time, “Candace Against the Universe” is the perfect movie finale to a long-standing series beloved by viewers everywhere.
